Venue Spotlight: Overton Hotel & Conference Center
This month’s venue spotlight is a Lubbock favorite. The Overton Hotel & Conference Center plays host each year to hundreds of meetings and events and thousands of guests. As the only Four Diamond hotel in all of West Texas, it’s no surprise that both out-of-towners and locals alike enjoy spending time at the Overton. We caught up with Director of Sales & Marketing, Shannon Baker, to learn more about this “Hub City” hot spot.
What’s the history of the Overton Hotel & Conference Center?
Propelled by the Overton redevelopment project (read more here), the Overton Hotel & Conference Center was completed in 2008. For more than a decade, a variety of local groups had tried unsuccessfully to secure a first-class hotel for Lubbock. Overton Park’s proximity to Texas Tech, downtown Lubbock and the future Marsha Sharp Freeway would make the city more compelling in the eyes of hotel developers. Four years of negotiations produced a deal in January 2007 for a hotel to be completed by that year.
Please describe your hotel and event center.
Just steps from Texas Tech University, the Overton Hotel is artfully designed with an emphasis on stylish, modern spaces with a kick of sophistication and Lone Star State sass. The 15-story landmark hotel is glamorous yet grounded, capturing the rich heritage and friendly unpretentious attitude that makes West Texas a mecca for modern-day cowboys, country musicians and the state’s most accomplished winemakers.
For groups of 12 to 1,200, the Overton’s Hotel’s award-winning Conference Center is one of Lubbock’s premier conference and meeting venues. State associations, government organizations, corporate, educational and religious groups rely on the Overton Hotel & Conference Center to deliver top-tier event planning. Our staff of experienced conference services professionals will handle every detail of your meeting, trade show or seminar. The two-level facility features 20,000 square feet of versatile meeting and exhibit space and an array of high-tech services and amenities.
What are some types of events/meetings you’ve hosted in the past or host annually?
The Overton has hosted thousands of events over the years of all sizes. Some of our biggest events come from groups like the Texas Cotton Ginners’ Association, Texas Association of Counties, College Baseball Hall of Fame, International Cotton Advisory Council, Texas Federation of Republican Women and the list goes on.
I’d also like to mention that our relationship with Texas Tech and the events and visitors they bring in is an important part of our success. Location can’t be beat, walking distance to the stadium and this is the place to be on game day. We have many loyal guests, VIPs, donors and alumni that have stayed with us since opening. We are the elite hotel partner of Texas Tech athletics and are fortunate to host many of the visiting teams. We have all of the Big 12 teams for men’s and women’s basketball, and we also host many visiting teams with baseball, soccer and volleyball. We also work closely with Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center on academic and medical conferences.
What’s up ahead in the future for the Overton?
Our restaurant, Pecan Grill, continues to see huge success. We strive to focus on the farm to table trend by ordering local meats, cheeses and produce. Soon we plan to update the outdoor patio with new fireplaces, fountain features, a pergola and shade awning. It will also be wired for live music.
