Venue Spotlight: McPherson Cellars

Known for his award-winning wine and grandiose, German wit, Kim McPherson is the owner and winemaker at McPherson Cellars, an urban winery in the heart of Lubbock’s Depot Entertainment District.

Winemaking is the family business so it was no surprise when Kim decided to follow in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Clinton “Doc” McPherson, a pioneer in the Texas wine industry. With a love for historic buildings, Kim selected the historic Coca-Cola bottling plant as the home for his winery. In December 2008, McPherson Cellars officially opened, offering Lubbock a new eclectic backdrop for events and premier West Texas wine.

The venue boasts a tasting room, indoor space and a courtyard for any celebration. As visitors walk into the tasting room, they will see a wall of wine bottles, each neck draped with medals, seating for everyday guests, a wood table adorned with metal finishes and a wall of glassy pebbles adding texture to the space.

As you venture into the main event space, the venue stuns with bright colors, large windows and plenty of space, enough to host an event for up to 250 guests.

Kim can’t take too much credit for the design, that would be the work of his better half, Sylvia McPherson, owner of La Diosa Cellars.

For those looking to say ‘I do,’ McPherson Cellars offers use of the facility for four hours with an additional hour for clean-up. Also, the bride and groom can use the winery for an hour for the rehearsal dinner, included in the package. And, brides may use the facility for their engagement pictures or as the setting for her bridal portraits.

When booking at McPherson Cellars, planners will appreciate the ease of coordinating a gorgeous event with most decorating and functional event needs met in house. With 30-inch cocktail tables, 60-inch round tables, 6-foot rectangular tables and white garden chairs available, the coordinator just needs to select from the available stock of tables, chairs, linens and wine barrels to adorn the space. If you are in need of chargers, centerpieces, table runners or napkins, the venue has access to additional decor pieces. Planners can use McPherson’s partner company and florist, Maria Burchfield.

Convenient for planners, the winery has an open vendor policy but offers a preferred list for those inquiring.

As for the bubbly, events at McPherson Cellars receive a 15 percent discount on all wine purchases for the event. Of course, the wines of choice are produced and bottled at McPherson. With more than 600 awards, Kim offers wines that will impress even the wine connoisseurs. For an additional fee, beer and liquor to the list of sips, but a licensed TABC bartender must be hired. Additional beverages will be served in the courtyard.

Prior to an event, the McPherson staff is available for table and chair set-up and will provide wine service during the event and cleanup at the end of the night.

If you’re looking for smaller venue for a meeting or presentation, consider the Sagmore, an equally as charming space just a few steps away from the main venue.  Also, the courtyard is available for celebrations of all sorts and can accommodate 50 guests.

McPherson Cellars also offers an indoor and outdoor sound system as well as parking and security for events.

If you need the perfect getaway, a 1952 Chevy Truck is onsite for a fitting end to the night!  To reserve McPherson Cellars for an event, email thomas@mcpherson.com or call 806.687.9463. For additional information regarding prices and more, visit their website.
