Finishing with a No. 6 ranking, the Texas Tech University men’s basketball team made history after landing in the Elite Eight during March Madness. Needless to say, the Red Raiders and Lubbockites, alike, have a love for basketball; in fact, the “Hub City” hosts a multitude of basketball tournaments every year because of the abundance of venues, ease of transportation, group-friendly restaurants and affordable accommodations. Check out these tips on how to score a crowd-pleasing experience for your next basketball tournament.

A Variety of Basketball Venues

Lubbock is home to nine basketball court complexes, ranging from multi-court facilities to single-court options which can seat thousands of spectators. The Apex Event Center is one of those venues complete with four hardwood courts, four multipurpose courts, concessions, a pro shop and meeting rooms. Home Texas Tech’s men and women basketball teams, the United Supermarkets Arena is another option for a tournament with seating for up to 15,000 spectators.

Local Flavor

Here in the “Hub City,” coaches, players, family and friends will find plenty of group-friendly restaurants to please even the pickiest of eaters. Local favorite Teddy Jack’s Hub City Grill boasts a menu full of creative half-pound burgers, pizzas and Tex-Mex eats, while Triple J Chophouse & Brew Co. is a local staple for chicken fried steak, nachos and chicken pot pie. For old-fashioned burgers, salads and even fried cheese sticks, opt for Spanky’s, a Lubbock institution since 1982. Need more options? We showcase a few other restaurants here.

Fun To-Dos

For family and friends, Lubbock has plenty of fun attractions to keep busy when it’s not game time. The driving range at 4ORE! Golf offers a relaxing way for players to have some friendly competition along with some great food. Meanwhile, the 49 authentically-restored structures at the National Ranching Heritage Center and the diverse exhibits at the Museum of Texas Tech University offer plenty to see, along with shows at the Science Spectrum & Omni Theater.
