The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra (LSO) announces its “Imagine | Our Music, Your Canvas” 2017-2018 Masterworks and Pops Concert Season. The LSO kicks off the season with “Sinatra and Beyond” highlighting the music of Frank Sinatra and the crooners of his era. The Masterworks schedule begins in October with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

“This season promises an exciting array of music and incredible guest artists,” said Galen Wixson, LSO president and CEO. “Enriching our community with quality performances and creative experiences is what makes the LSO such an influential force for music in the region.”

September 23: “Sinatra and Beyond” (one night only) This year’s Fall Pops performance features guest artist Tony DeSare.

October 13 & 14: “The Triumph” The season’s first Masterworks concert includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9,” The Lubbock Chorale and guest soloists Rebecca Wascoe-Hays (soprano), Jill Grove (mezzo-soprano), Karl Dent (tenor) and David Grogan (bass).

November 10 & 11: “The Pictures” The second Masterworks concert features Jose Moncayo’s “Huapango,” Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” and Leonard Bernstein’s “Symphony No. 2 – The Age of Anxiety,” with guest conductor Donato Cabrera and solo pianist Richard Fountain.

December 2: “The Heart of Christmas” (one night only) Guest group Jeans ‘n Classics joins this year’s Holiday Pops concert.

January 19 & 20: “The Impressionist” The third Masterworks concert includes Claude Debussy’s “La Mer” and Maurice Ravel’s “Piano Concerto in G Major” with guest pianist Adam Golka.

March 2 & 3: “The Wanderer” The fourth Masterworks concert features Gioachino Rossini’s “Barber of Seville: Overture,” Georges Bizet’s “Symphony in C,” Samuel Barber’s “Violin Concerto” and Maurice Ravel’s “Tzigane” with guest violinist Simone Porter.

May 4 & 5: “The Folk Spirit” The final Masterworks concert captures excitement and national pride with Paul Hindemith’s “Mathis der Maler” and Antonín Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dances” and “Symphony No. 8.”
