The history of comics is fraught with historical controversy. For nearly a century comics gained little respect both with the general public and in academic circles. Comics were once thought of as the worst literary form of trash that could turn one’s brain into mush (especially young children). In fact, during the 1950s Comics were thought to corrupt the youth of America so much so that the Senate held hearings on the evils and dangers of comics. However, the past thirty years have seen the status of comics also known as sequential art rise. There are now comics for nearly ever topic imaginable from the superhero stories to historical and scientific textbooks done in the format. The rise of Comics Studies in Universities is one of example of comics finally being given their due as cultural artifacts. This presentation will briefly cover some of the important moments in the history of comics and look at the art and artists associated.
